#BOSSY Approved Art Basel - One to Watch - Troy Simmons

It's that time of year. Art Basel will descend on Miami next month so get ready! With events jam-packed from December 2nd to the 7th, it's hard to know which are the hottest shows attend, Luckily BOSSY is to the rescue. BOSSY invites it's readers to check out Art Basel - One to Watch- Troys Simmons.

Local artist Troy Simmons has immersed himself in his latest artwork, exploring the
evolution of urbanism and nature’s persistence to coexist. A consistent theme, which echoes
true to his intense fascination with nature and modern Brutalist Architecture.

Under the direction of JanKossen Contemporary Art Gallery in Basel, Switzerland, Simmons will
showcase his new concrete work during a solo show at CONTEXT Miami Art Fair December
2nd-7th at booth #E75. He will also have several pieces on display at SCOPE Art Show Miami Beach.

His massive, large-scale concrete canvases are a mix of acrylic paints and raw materials. At first
glance, the magnitude of his work is clearly realized. Most of his pieces weight over 100
pounds. A rough and raw relationship often described as a cataclysmic illustration of urbanism.
Simmons calls his work a “re-incarnation of the Arte Povera genre” where the inclusion of
simple natural elements, such as wood and soil takes an integral part in the creation of the art.
His intended goal is to create a playful mix of the hard and soft, expressing the ideological
perceptions of binary relationships

Rochi Llaneza, Former Executive Director of Hardcore Contemporary Art, curated his first show
in Miami in 2009. She says, “Creating an algorithm of inspired imagery, Simmons’ connection to
his ecological charged pieces is clearly reflected in his use of re-purposed materials.”
The inspiration behind his latest collection evolved after a recent trip to Germany. He spent
time with his wife’s family exploring Baden-Württemberg in the southern part of the country.
The postwar architecture is a fragmentation of Germany’s traditional heritage mixed with
simple modern construction.

Simmons currently works as a full-time artist, but his educational background is in Architecture
and Environmental Science. He studied at Sam Houston State University and worked as an
Environmental Lab Technician in Houston, Texas. He later went on to Oklahoma State
University and earned a degree in Architectural Design.
Simmons is a Resident Artist at the Bakehouse Artist Complex in Miami’s Wynwood Art District.

Beyond the Lights - A Love Story

14 years ago Gina Prince- Blythewood made young women everywhere fall for Love & Basketball. Now a staple, this was an all black cast with a classic love storyline and great actors. So for over a decade we've all been breathlessly waiting for Price-Blythewood to make us fall in love all over again. She's hit the mark with Beyond the Lights.

Starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw best known for her portrayal of the aristocratic Belle,as Noni Jean and Nate Parker of Red Tails (and another Prince-Blythewood gem The Secret Life of Bees") as the handsome police officer Kaz. Beyond the Lights is a love story for 2014.

Honestly, Beyond the Lights reminds me of A Star is Born/The Bodyguard remixed with a Rihanna-esque starlet. However somehow it works. Minnie Driver was unexpected as the mom-ager from hell, but she is basically brilliant.

The love story begins when superstar in the making Noni who after winning an award for a duet with the hottest rapper in the game Kid Culprit (played by real life rapper Machine Gun Kelly) is poised to drop her own highly anticipated debut album. Instead of feeling on top of the world Noni is on a downward spiral until her knight and shining armor, Kaz literally saves her life.

Besides being a love story, Beyond the Light goes a but deeper as an expose on young women being groomed in the industry with a "face down, ass up" approach towards stardom. The story is as much about Noni finding her own voice as it is the couple finding happiness with each other. Speaking of finding her own voice, Mbatha-Raw finds her own as she actually sings in the film.

There are a some cheesy moments, like Kaz finding reasons to shirtless a lot for no apparent reason, but there is strong storyline and the subtle believable performances by the leads as well as Minnie Driver and Danny Glover more than make up for any eye rolling worthy moments.

Beyond the Lights hit theaters today November 14, 2014. Check it out, let me know what you think!

I give Beyond the Light 3.75 Stars #BOSSY Approved!

The Auto Show is in Miami

The Miami International Auto Show is here Nov. 7-16th at the Miami Beach Convention Center. I had the chance to look around as I attended the 13th Annual AutoFOCUS Awards which recognizes excellence in Entertainment, and Business in South Florida. After my very own Hubby took home the award for BEST SONG at the Miami Urban Music and Film Festival. We were treated to a peek at the hottest cars for 2015. You can check out luxury foreign cars like Mercedes and BMW and out homegrown classics like Cadillac and GMC. Tickets start at 6.00 for children and 15.00 for adults. You still have some time to get out and enjoy the car show. I'm partial to little sports cars and BIG SUV's, what's your dream car?
